Life 100 Days After My Whole30

Thursday, May 12, 2016. Whole30 plus 100 days of Clean Eating.  Mostly.

It’s pretty incredible, given my past with food, that I completed an entire Whole30, followed all the steps during the reintroduction phase, and stayed on the clean eating path for this long.  OK, the mostly clean eating path.

Let’s see what today brings…

4:15 AM.  Alarm.  Awake.  2 cups of black coffee.

5:45 AM.  Breakfast.  I finished the last of the ground beef hash and my veggie mix all scrambled together with one cup of egg whites.  I also ate half teaspoon of local bee pollen.

BFast 5_12_16

I made a big travel mug of green tea this morning for the drive.

11:00 AM.  Lunch.  A big green salad with half an avocado and a diced up grilled pork chop on top.  Oil and vinegar dressing.

Lunch 5_12_16

4:30 PM.  Snack.  I had a double shot of espresso with some steamed almond milk to make a nice latte.  I also ate my sliced Red Delicious apple that was both red and delicious.  In that order.

But wait.  There’s more:

4:35 PM.  Snack V.2.  Whilst returning said almond milk to the refrigerator, I discovered that Jane had made some Scotch Eggs!

Scotch Eggs 5_12_16

Fully Compliant

These Scotch Eggs were baked instead of fried, and no breadcrumb coating was used.  It was really hard to stop at just one.  Freakin’ delicious!  I’m sure these are what powered Braveheart when he was out doing all that Braveheart stuff back in the day.

6:30 PM.  Dinner.  Chicken Fajita salad.  Seasoned and grilled chicken (boneless skinless thighs), grilled red and yellow bell peppers, and white onion. Feast your eyes on this:

Clean Eating

Clean eating because I had some (compliant) guacamole, organic grass fed sour cream, and a tortilla on the side.

That’s about it for today.

9:30 PM.  Targeted bed time.

And so goes Step Four: Life After Your Whole30.  Today was a good day.

Life 99 Days After My Whole30

Wednesday, May 11, 2016. Whole30 plus 99 days of Clean Eating.  Mostly.

Let’s see what today brings…  A lot of this is going to look really familiar.  Again.  Déjà vu.  Déjà vu can be a lot like Déjà moo – you know, when you’re at work and the boss comes up with something really stupid or you’re talking with that one ‘Drama’ friend and it’s like “Oh, no, this bullsh!t again…”  Yeah, that’s Déjà moo.  OK, where was I?  Oh, yeah…blog…

4:15 AM.  Alarm.  Awake.  2 cups of black coffee.

5:45 AM.  Breakfast.  Ground beef hash with white and yellow sweet potatoes mixed in; a cup of veggie mix: summer squash and zucchini, red and green peppers, and mushrooms, all scrambled together with one cup of egg whites.  And a half teaspoon of local bee pollen.

I made a big travel mug of green tea this morning.  Imagine that.

11:00 AM.  Lunch.  A nice big green salad with half an avocado and a diced up grilled pork chop on top.  The pork chop was grilled with some mesquite seasoning, and it came out great.  Again.

4:00 PM.  Snack.  I had a double shot of espresso with my apple slices.  Tasty as always.

I talked about this before, and I would like to repeat what I said before – we’re definitely not coffee snobs, and we’re willing to give most brands a try.  Within reason, of course.  I wrote about trying ground espresso “off the shelf”, and found that Illy was pretty good.  We also tried Megaglia D’Oro, and liked that as well.  So props to the Italian brands so far.  So now we’re going to check out Columbia for some Café Bustelo.  Not bad.  I like the strength and richness of the flavor.  Nothing too subtle going on here.  The Rick and Jane consensus is that all three of these espressos are good for stand alone double shots and café Americano’s.  With that being said, we do have our stash of single origin / fair trade / organic beans and a really nice Capresso conical burr grinder – – – I just started going coffee snob here, so I’ll stop about the coffee now.

6:00 PM.  Dinner.  Grilled pork chop, white potatoes cooked in the TFal ActiFry, and FRESH green beans.   Yummmm.

I’ll shut up now.

11:00 AM.  Lunch.  A nice big green salad with half an avocado and a diced up grilled pork chop on top.  I wish you all could have had a bite of this salad.  OK, not this exact salad, but one just like it.  I don’t think I would have shared this with anyone!

Whole30 / Clean Eating Observation:  Jane caught a few minutes of the Wendy Williams Show this morning, and they ran a segment called Celebrity Food Trends featuring Tanya Zuckerbrot, the author of The F‑Factor Diet: Discover the Secret to Permanent Weight Loss.  Anyone read this or know anything about it?  I was just glad to see that a lot of the celebrity types are picking up on what I’m laying down.  Oh, and as a side note – and you have to imagine that I am screaming this – “WHAT DO YOU MEAN KOMBUCHA COSTS $8 A BOTTLE IN MANHATTAN?!?!?!”

I ate my carrots, celery, and apple slices at various times this afternoon while I was doing even more running around.

6:00 PM.  Dinner.  Smothered pork chop, mashed potatoes made with organic, grass-fed butter and whole milk, and Italian cut green beans fresh from the can.

I made a big travel mug of green tea this morning.  I have 3 stops to make before I get to my office.  Hopefully that will last.

Whole30 / Clean Eating observation:  It is absolutely amazing to me how just 1 day of going rogue (yesterday) can make you feel like crap the next day.  Seriously.  I’ve learned over the past few months how sugar bad carbs bad fat etc. affect me.  This morning I wake up and I’m moving kind of slow, muscles hurt a little and the joints are a little achy, and I totally space out during sports center and the news.  Three hours after breakfast I am totally starving to death and drinking 16 oz of water did not help curb my appetite.  I tore through my carrots and celery, and immediately moved on to my lunch.  Then, around 2 this afternoon, I’m chugging more water and eating my apple slices.  So my effect from bad food is the sudden onslaught of hunger between meals, but on the next day.  But I’m drinking more water, which is nice.

10:00 AM.  Lunch.  A big green salad with half an avocado and a sliced up Aidells Chicken and Apple sausage sitting on top.  Tasty.

Let’s see what today brings…Hopefully, for all of the mothers out there, it brings you a Happy Mother’s Day, whether or not your children are human or fur covered.  And hopefully you have had a way to honor your own mothers as well.

Today is free grazing day.  No shame.  Back on track tomorrow.  I’m going to skip the photos today and just give you a description of what got eaten.

This morning for breakfast:  Krispy Kreme Doughnuts – our son’s choice.  Because he knows Mom really really likes doughnuts.  And she wouldn’t want to hurt his feelings now, would she?

This morning for brunch:  The Bagel Café – Jane’s choice

This afternoon for dinner:  Shawarma House – my mother’s choice.  Hey, why not?

And so goes Step Four: Life After Your Whole30.  Today was a good day for all the moms involved!

Saturday, May 7, 2016. Whole30 plus 95 days of Clean Eating.  Mostly.

Let’s see what today brings…

6:30 AM.  Awake.  It’s nice to sleep a couple hours later than usual.  Coffee time!!!

7:30 AM.  Breakfast.  It’s pretty rare that I actually wake up hungry.  I usually wake up grumpy, but she was already out of bed.  waka waka.  I did a rough peel on a medium white potato, diced it up and threw it into the Tfal Actifry to start cooking.  After they were lightly browned, I was Rolling in the Deep and sliced up some Aidells Chicken and Apple sausages and threw those into the Actifry long enough to warm through and get a little sweat going.  I cooked up a couple eggs over easy, and added in a little egg whites to pretend I have 3 eggs instead of 2.  Grocery day and all that…

BFast 5_7_16

I’ll break a yolk.  Just give me the chance!

1:00 PM.  Lunch.  Sort of.  We went to a kids birthday party.  It was actually pretty fun.  Good kids and all that.  Anyway, lunch was served – Pizza.  I decided not to have any.  My decision on pizza is that when I do decide to have some pizza, there’s this family owned pizza and pasta restaurant here in Las Vegas that will get my patronage.  Well, saying ‘no thanks’ to the pizza was no problem, but when it came to the birthday cake, well…  I didn’t want to hurt the poor little girls feelings, now did I?  I mean, I’m not some kind of monster who refuses birthday cake from a child.  I went for it.  It was delicious.  I shall invoke the 80/20 rule on the cake.

The cake looked exactly like this:

Cake

The Cold Never Bothered Me Anyway

Anyway, this cake triggered some serious hunger reaction.  Not for more cake, but for some serious protein.  We got home and I had some of Jane’s leftover chicken.  That should hold me for a little while!

6:30 PM.  Dinner.  Chicken wings, carrots, and celery.  A quick recap: chicken wings coated in potato starch covered and left in the fridge for at least 3 hours, baked on a rack.  Franks RedHot and ghee for your sauce, and Whole30 Ranch dressing (we use the avocado oil version) for your dip.  One of my all-time favorites.

Dinner 5_7_18

I kinda just bombed these on the plate and took a quick picture because I couldn’t wait to get started!  See how crispy the 2 top ones look that aren’t spun in the sauce?  Yeah, baby!

11:00 PM.  Trying to be in bed by then.  I’m messing with the blog and I also shot 800 (yes, 800!) pictures at the kiddie party this afternoon, so I’m going through those in order to Dropbox them tonight so everybody can get a look at them, especially the mommies for Mother’s Day.

And with that, I bid you good evening.  And to all of the mothers, I wish you a Happy Mother’s Day!

Did you know:

Every woman 18 and older should accept a carnation if one is offered. The flower you take is in honor of your mother, not you. It doesn’t symbolize whether or not you’re a mom.

If you have a strained, or even non-existent, relationship with your mom, you can still accept a flower out of respect for the role of mothers in society.

Carnations are traditionally given because they were the favorite flower of Anna Reeves Jarvis, the mother of the women who campaigned for Mother’s Day to become a national holiday.

You take (or wear) a white carnation if your mother is deceased and a pink carnation if she is living.

Many churches, for the sake of simplicity, offer just one color of carnation.

If you find yourself the lucky recipient of a corsage (It’s sad that they’re pretty much a thing of the past!), it’s correctly worn on your left side—the side of your heart! Wear a corsage high on your shoulder with the flower pointing up and the stem pointing down.

Mother’s Day corsages (unlike prom flowers) don’t need to match or coordinate with your outfit. Regardless of the look (just like all those macaroni necklaces!), wear them with abandon, pride, and love!

Thanks, Maralee McKee!

3:30 AM.  Awake.  Why?!?!  Amber Alert.  Jane’s phone is buzzing away on her night stand, and my phone is alerting it’s little heart out in the living room.  I’m glad things worked out.  Back to sleep?  Ain’t gonna happen…

Cups plural of black coffee.

5:45 AM.  Breakfast.  Ground beef hash with white and yellow sweet potatoes mixed in with one cup of the veggie mix: summer squash and zucchini, red and green peppers, and mushrooms, all scrambled together with one cup of egg whites .  I also chopped up and threw in the leftover green beans from last night.  Waste not, want not.  I also had a half teaspoon of local bee pollen.

4:00 PM.  Early Dinner.  Zoodles with meat sauce.  Awesome!  Our son (the chicken leg stealing jerk mentioned above) won a Dash Go Rapid Peeler a while back, so we have to get some use out of it.  So you throw a zucchini onto the rapid peeler and let it do its thing, and you get zucchini noodles, or “zoodles”.  Why do I feel like Dr. Evil saying “Laser” when I say “Zoodle”?  He (the chicken leg stealing jerk mentioned above) had regular pasta with his Bolognese (fancy name for meat sauce) and I almost had a bite of the real-deal.  almost.

I really want to start the day with a mini-rant about Cinco de Mayo, tacos, and tequila, in as much as I want to rant about St. Patrick’s day, beer, and corned beef and cabbage.  Or Passover foods and Orthodox Easter meals from the past couple weeks.  But I won’t.  Get out there and enjoy food, drink, and life.  Learn about and experience new cultures!

Whole30 / Clean Eating Observation:  So while I’m having my snack, Jane has made herself some toasted Ezekial 4:9 Cinnamon Raisin Bread with almond butter.  Now this bread is non-compliant SWYPO etc. on the program, but it is Clean Eating.  I’ve had bread twice in the last 123 days.  Today marks the 3rd time in 123 days that I’ve eaten bread.  OK, I’m not saying I was a bread addict just because I ate bread in some way, shape, or form with EVERY meal before I started the Whole30, but I will say that I was a bread addict carb junkie before my Whole30 because I have been known to eat double-decker stuffing sandwiches on occasion.  True story.  So Jane made a couple of slices of this heavenly deliciousness of Biblical proportions, and that brings me to Part 2 to this Observation:  I understand why this is called Ezekial 4:9 bread, but maybe they should have given this bread a second name and called it Psalm 78:24-25 bread.  Manna!!!  Am I right or what?

7:00 PM.  Dinner.  Fried chicken, mashed potatoes made with chicken stock and organic grass fed butter, and fresh green beans.  Fresh out of the can, that is.  Never gets old!
