Whole30

Whole30 Observations Day 1

Here’s how and why my Whole30 adventure begins:  Back in August 2015 I quit smoking.  I smoked too many cigarettes for too many years.  If you’ve ever been there, or know someone who has, you know about the weight gain that usually occurs after quitting.  I’m not going to go into the science or psychology of the weight gain.  You get it.  So visualize this, if you will:  Remember the movie Ghostbusters, when Slimer is at the hotdog cart with both hands and his mouth full of hotdogs?  I was kind of like that.  We need to do something about this.

Day 1.  January 4, 2016.  “No Big Deal/What Have I Done?”

Let’s get this party started!

@whole30 Book says “No Big Deal / What Have I Done?”  I’m going with the no big deal attitude.  For now.  MTF… (more to follow)

4:15 AM.  Coffee.  Black. 2 Cups.  No prob.  I’m a big fan of coffee in various forms.

5:45 AM.  Breakfast – 2 Egg Cups w/veggies, small baked potato. Made a big green jasmine tea to take with me to work.  OK, so here’s the gap and what’s really happening from 4:15 to 5:45 AM: Sports Center, National News, Local News, wake Jane up at 5:00, roust the teenager at 5:15, shower and dress.

6:00 AM. Leave the house, the kid drops himself off at school (driving lessons, we’re taking our time), and proceed to the office.  I’m at the office pretending to work and get caught-up on things that were kind of neglected for the last, say, 2 weeks. And then:

8:15 AM. I’m STARVING!  It hits me all at once, but at least I have a plan of attack.  Time to hit the lunch box for a snack.  Carrots and celery to the rescue!  OK, that was a close call.  Here’s my MTF moment from above- I went into the break room and there was all kinds of Christmas and New Years leftovers.  Chocolate, cookies, candy, you name it.  Lots of treats.  Unopened.  Did I mention Walker’s Shortbread (Christmas Kryptonite)?  WHAT HAVE I DONE?!?!

As an ex-smoker, I think I know a thing or two about fighting urges/cravings/impulses and resisting temptation when it comes to quitting or battling an addiction.  Find your happy place.  Use the Force.  Remember why you’re doing this Whole30 thing in the first place. Three minutes from now you’re going to feel a lot better!

10:30 AM.  Lunch.  Resistance is futile!  (Side note: I’ve been informed that I’m using Star Wars and Star Trek quotes side by side.  She’s such a nerd!)  I’m digging into my lunch box again.  Killer garden salad with chicken and avocado, home made oil and vinegar dressing.  Don’t get me started with avocado. I’ve always liked them, now they are elevated to a somewhat heavenly status.  I’m full.  Life is good.

2:oo PM.  Going well.  Apple time.  Love me some apples!  NOTE:  I always “hit the wall” around 2:00 every day.  Today I didn’t.  Stoked!

3:oo PM.  Went and picked up my son guitar boy from school.  If it’s school related, he shall henceforth be known as guitar boy.  If it’s related to his work, he shall be known as barista boy.  My blog should be called “But I Digress”.  Where was I?  OK, so we take a run out to Boca Park to grab his paycheck, and swing on across the street to Tivoli Village to see if his bud was working at the Pressed Juicery.  His friend wasn’t there, but we did have a nice conversation with the person working there.  After he sampled a few juices from the menu, it was time to purchase and go.  I know the Whole30 program wants you to Not Drink Your Meals, which I didn’t, but it was nice sampling the different juices, and it was my first real READ THE LABEL experience to make sure there were no non-compliant ingredients.

4:00.  Home.  STARVING!  I will NOT go to the cupboards or fridge for a snack.  I will resist.  Jane shows up with some home made trail mix.  Order has been restored yet again.

6:00 PM.  Dinner.  Pot roast with tons of veggies.  Normally, I would have dragged a few slices of bread, any bread (OK, the cheap white stuff, preferably) through the sauce, but again, Anna (Elsa?), Let it go!  3 minute rule.  Resist for 3 minutes, and you’re done!

8:00 PM.  Bed.  Seriously.  I really hope this Whole30 thing can help me with the early crash and burn every night.  I will say that Day 1 was pretty easy and was a success.
