Clean Eating, Whole30

Life 93 Days After My Whole30

Thursday, May 5, 2016. Whole30 plus 92 days of Clean Eating.  Mostly.

Let’s see what today brings…

I really want to start the day with a mini-rant about Cinco de Mayo, tacos, and tequila, in as much as I want to rant about St. Patrick’s day, beer, and corned beef and cabbage.  Or Passover foods and Orthodox Easter meals from the past couple weeks.  But I won’t.  Get out there and enjoy food, drink, and life.  Learn about and experience new cultures!

4:15  AM.  Alarm.  Awake.  2 cups of black coffee.

5:45 AM.  Breakfast.  Ground beef hash with white and yellow sweet potatoes mixed in with one cup of the veggie mix: summer squash and zucchini, red and green peppers, and mushrooms, all scrambled together with one cup of egg whites .  I also had a half teaspoon of local bee pollen. Again.

I made a big travel mug of green tea this morning for the ride in and office time.

11:00 AM.  Lunch.  Another big ol’ green salad with half an avocado and a mesquite-seasoned grilled chicken breast.

4:00 PM.  Snack.  I made a Caffè Americano in a Chemex-shaped cup because I’m kind of crazy like that.  I also had a sliced Red Delicious apple that was both red and delicious.

Whole30 / Clean Eating Observation:  So while I’m having my snack, Jane has made herself some toasted Ezekial 4:9 Cinnamon Raisin Bread with almond butter.  Now this bread is non-compliant SWYPO etc. on the program, but it is Clean Eating.  I’ve had bread twice in the last 123 days.  Today marks the 3rd time in 123 days that I’ve eaten bread.  OK, I’m not saying I was a bread addict just because I ate bread in some way, shape, or form with EVERY meal before I started the Whole30, but I will say that I was a bread addict carb junkie before my Whole30 because I have been known to eat double-decker stuffing sandwiches on occasion.  True story.  So Jane made a couple of slices of this heavenly deliciousness of Biblical proportions, and that brings me to Part 2 to this Observation:  I understand why this is called Ezekial 4:9 bread, but maybe they should have given this bread a second name and called it Psalm 78:24-25 bread.  Manna!!!  Am I right or what?

7:00 PM.  Dinner.  Fried chicken, mashed potatoes made with chicken stock and organic grass fed butter, and fresh green beans.  Fresh out of the can, that is.  Never gets old!

Dinner 5_5_16

Clean Eating

That’s about it for now.  Finally a Friday tomorrow. woo-hoo!

OK, one more picture of that Caffè Americano before I go:

Caffe Americano

It’s almost like a funny little Guinness!

OK.  Done.

9:30 PM.  Targeted bed time. Night, all.

And so goes Step Four: Life After Your Whole30.  Today was a good day.

Wednesday, May 4, 2016. Whole30 plus 92 days of Clean Eating.  Mostly.

Let’s see what today brings…

I haven’t even woke up yet, and I’m already tired of the “May the Fourth Be With You” schtick.  I get it.  I got it.  year after year after year.  Jeez, listen to the grumpy me!

4:15  AM.  Alarm.

11:00 AM.  Lunch.  A big green salad with half an avocado and a grilled chicken breast and added spinach.  The chicken breast was grilled with the same mesquite seasoning Jane used yesterday.  Friggin’ tasty!

2:00 PM. Snack.  A sliced Red Delicious apple and a double shot of espresso. I ended up at home a lot earlier this afternoon due to forgetting to bring some paperwork I needed with me in order to take care of some other business on my side of town run on sentence, and I wasn’t about to drive back to my office to get it.  Tomorrow’s another day, as they say.  Whoever ‘they’ are, ‘they’ say lots of things.  And you know what ‘they’ say…

Snack 5_4_16

7:00 PM.  Dinner.  Protein-style hamburgers and orange sweet potato fries cooked in the TFal ActiFry.  We’re getting some mileage out of that ActiFry thing lately.

They’re not the prettiest fries, but they are very enjoyable.

That’s about it for now.

4:00 PM. Snack.  A sliced Red Delicious apple and a latte made with a double shot of espresso and some steamed almond milk.  It’s like my g0-to snack.

6:30 PM.  Dinner.  One of my favorites.  Roasted chicken, potatoes cooked in the TFal ActiFry,  1 piece of broccoli and Italian cut green beans.  Instead of using oil in the ActiFry, we used the drippings from the chicken while it was roasting.  Awesome.

Whole30 / Clean Eating Observation: Looking back over the last 30+91 days, I think this is the only broccoli I have eaten over that time.  I don’t hate the little trees, I just like me some green beans, so that’s what I go for.

So that’s about it for now.  Talk to you tomorrow.

We don’t do latte art.  We do latte Rorschach tests.  It’s a bunny with a sleeping cap.  It’s interpretive art.  Yeah, that’s it.

6:30 PM.  Dinner.  Chicken skewers and beef skewers with summer squash, zucchini, red pepper, and mushrooms.  Served with a delicious chimichurri and some cauliflower rice.  Off the charts good!  According to the picture, it appears that I had a mushroom blowout at 5 o’clock, Goose.

Whole30 Observation:  Looks like I’m going to try to walk the straight and narrow for a little bit after yesterday’s movie theater breach of clean eating.  Moderation.  I get it.  Baby steps.  Actually, it was a lesson learned.  I won’t be doing that again.  He said.

Life 89 Days After My Whole30

Sunday, May 1, 2016. Whole30 plus 89 days of Clean Eating.  Mostly.

Let’s see what today brings…

6:30 AM.  Awake.  The dogs are re-enacting the entire fight scene from Kill Bill Vol. 1 (the one that starts in the restaurant) in our bedroom.  They are playing ALL of the character and doing their own stunts, too.  Time for a few cups of black coffee.

8:00 AM.  Took those nutty dogs for a walk.  2.15 miles.  Just enough to get them warmed up for more mischief.

9:00 AM.  Breakfast.  Back to the TFal ActiFry.  I cubed a medium white potato and threw it into the machine with a little olive oil and some ghee.  Once the spuds were mostly Acti-Fried, I sliced up some Aidells Chicken and Apple sausages  and threw them in with the potatoes until they just started to sweat a little.  I then cooked 3 eggs over easy in some ghee, and threw the entire mess onto a plate, lightly seasoned with some salt and pepper.

BFast 5_1_16

I swear the eggs DID NOT look like that when I cooked them.  It’s like there are random yolks everywhere or something.

Everything I/we had to eat for the rest of today is non-compliant, non-clean eating food that even going with the 80/20 rule is pushing it.  So, no photos.  Just a brief description of what occurred.

3:20 PM.  Movie Time!

Keanu

I had buttered popcorn.  Butter…now that’s an interesting name for that stuff they put on the popcorn.  I can’t tell you the last time I had popcorn, but I’m sure it was before Christmas.  I also had a Dr. Pepper.  Now I remember that had a Coke on Valentines Day, and I’m pretty sure that that soda was the only one I have had since the 3rd of January when we started the Whole30!!!  I could be wrong.  Anyway, I really enjoyed the popcorn and soda.  For about the first half of the movie. I ate half of a large sized order of popcorn, and I drank about 1/4th of my large Dr. Pepper (go big or go home, right?).   But either the popcorn or the soda or the combination of both did not agree with me.  I just barely made it through the movie.  I’ll spare you the details.

8:00 PM.  Dinner.  Raising Cane’s.  Delicious.  No regrets.

That’s about it for now.

9:30 PM.  Targeted bed time.  I hope.

Life 88 Days After My Whole30

Saturday, April 30, 2016. Whole30 plus 88 days of Clean Eating.  Mostly.

Let’s see what today brings…

4:00  AM.  It’s raining.  Hard.  Hard enough to wake me up, and wake the 2 dogs.  Jane?  Oblivious.  Me?  Back to sleep after a few minutes.

4:30 AM.  Moggy, our gray stripy tom cat, thinks this is the best time for some attention.  I’m not kidding when I say that this cat is walking on my face and head.  I give the dumb cat some attention, “readjust”, and back to sleep (again) after a few more minutes.

6:30 AM.  Jane’s alarm.  She’s volunteering for a few hours with C5 today.  I’m up, too.  A few cups of black coffee.

8:oo AM.  Breakfast.  I halved and then sliced some small yellow potatoes and cooked them in the TFal ActiFry, sliced (on the bias, as the chef’s would say) some Aidells Chicken and Apple sausages  and heated them in a frying pan just long enough to caramelize a little, and scrambled up some egg whites with my veggie mixed added.  I had to double-up on everything because our son was actually awake AND ate breakfast with me this morning!

2:00 PM.  Jane’s putting together some avocado deviled eggs for our bi-weekly family dinner.

Devilled Eggs 4_30_16

Fully Compliant

Deviled eggs using avocado instead of mayonnaise, threw in some lime juice, cilantro, salt, white pepper, cayenne, and topped with paprika.  Of course, we had to sample them to make sure they were good.  They were.  So here’s what’s interesting – the egg carriers that we have hold 18 egg halves.  I mean, really?!?!  Do the math, egg keeper carrier people!  These egg carriers must have been designed by the same people who sell hotdogs in packs of 10, but hot dog buns in pack of 8.  Conspiracy!!!  Oh, and let’s not forget the Hebrew National hot dogs that come in packs of 7.

So now that I’m on a hotdog rant, check this out:  For appetizers this afternoon, Jane is also making mini corndog muffins.  She’s going with Nathan’s dogs and Jiffy classic corn muffin mix.  Gotta love Pinterest (so I’m told).

Mini Corndogs

80/20 Rule.  Karma Strikes.  Bad Juju. No Mojo.

Unfortunately, these little pieces of crap stuck to the mini muffin tin and wouldn’t release.  Straight into the bin, as Jane would say.  At least we have deviled eggs!

5:00 PM.  Dinner.  Pot roast with carrots and potatoes, and a fruit salad on the side.  Oh, watermelon, how I’ve missed thee.

IMG_2131[1]

There were other foods to be eaten, but I decided to stay in the clean eating groove.  I went back for more watermelon.  Twice.

Whole30 Observation:  Here’s a tip from me to you – Tajín Clásico seasoning on fruit.  Say it like “ta-heen”.  Say it like yum.  It really gives the fruit a nice kick.

And with that, I think I’ll call it quits for tonight.

10:30 PM.  Targeted bed time.  We’ll see about that.

And so goes Step Four: Life After Your Whole30.  Today was a good day.

4:15  AM.  Alarm.  Awake.  2 cups of black coffee.

5:45 AM.  Breakfast.  Ground beef hash with white and yellow sweet potatoes; one cup of supposed to be scrambled egg whites with one cup of this weeks veggie mix: summer squash and zucchini, red and green peppers, and mushrooms.  I also had a half teaspoon of local bee pollen.

My eggs ended up in omelette form because I wasn’t paying attention to my cooking.  Look!  Something shiny!  *wanders away*.  It’s like that a lot for me…

And, for the fifth time this week, I’m going with the tried and true green tea this morning for the ride in and office time.

Here’s a side note from us – our friends little girl turned 5, so Jane put together these little cookie pops for her.

Cookie Pops

Little Cookie Pops For The Kids

Whole30 Observation:  Cookies = My Kryptonite, Achilles Heel, Samson’s Locks, you name it.  These little pops were made using Oreo’s and Candy Melts.  Oreo’s have always been one of my all-time favorites.  While Jane was making these cookie pops, I didn’t sneak single one.  But I did make an inquiry as to when a batch of homemade chocolate chip cookies (with walnuts) might be making an appearance.  So I have Christmas to look forward to, I guess.

The view from my first stop this morning:

The view from my first stop this morning.  Snow.  In the desert.  At the end of April!

11:00 AM.  I just had to stop in to my office.  Lunch.  Another awesome green salad with half an avocado and leftover brisket, oil and vinegar dressing.  Delicious.

Lots of running around today.  I had a big bag of carrots and celery to chew on while I was driving around.  I managed to not hit any traffic this afternoon and made it home at a decent time.

4:00 PM.  Snack.  Sliced Red Delicious apple, and a latte made with a double shot of espresso and some steamed almond milk.  I’m feeling much better now that I had some coffee this afternoon!

5:30 PM.  Dinner.  Leftover encore presentation from last night, just re-packaged.  I diced up and cooked a medium white potato in the TFal ActiFry, sliced up some leftover grilled zucchini, and cubed up a leftover pork chop.  I cooked the spud ’til it was mostly done, threw in the leftover chopped grilled chop and let it get warm, then tossed in the zucchini just long enough to warm through.  Again, all the cooking was done in the ActiFry thing.  Another winner!
